Wargrave is a small village in central Berkshire, UK, midway between Reading and Maidenhead and 3 miles from Henley on Thames . Wargrave Runners came to life early in 1984 when 5 regular runners got together and decided to begin running as a group.

Our original aims were to inspire and foster peoples interests in running within the village community. We did not consider ourselves an 'athletic club' but more a 'social running club' or 'running social club'. Our objectives were as follows:

  • To encourage running as a leisure pursuit within the village by means of regular meetings and the organization of occasional running related events.
  • To disseminate information on all aspects of the sport.
  • To encourage participation in local running events.
  • To provide a focal point for local runners to meet and socialise.

Those that formed the club had run many races, half marathons, marathons, etc., as individuals, but at the Reading Half Marathon of 1984 we entered our first official team of Wargrave Runners. We have continued to support, and run in, most local races over the last 16 years and have had at least 2 representatives in each London Marathon during that time. We have also taken part in a number of foreign events in New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Bordeaux, Boston etc..
